Vaucluse House, as it stands today, is one of the few remaining harbourside family estates from the 1800s. Opening to the public 100 years ago as Australia’s very first ‘house museum’, the house now represents colonial life from the 1820s – 1860s when it was home to William & Sarah Wentworth and their ten children. The Wentworth family typified the socially aspiring upper-middle class of the Victorian era – colonial style. They were rule breakers, ambitious, opportunistic, upwardly mobile, entrepreneurial, rich.
